Things to Do This Month:

  • plant bulbs until ground freezes or during a thaw
  • put burlap on stakes for winter protection of broadleaf evergreens
  • apply winter mulches to bulbs, perennials, strawberries after the ground freezes
  • cut evergreens (including American holly) for indoor decorations
  • take special care of balled and burlapped Christmas trees
  • care for pointsettia and other gift plants
  • keep firewood outside until 1-2 days before burning so critters in logs won’t wake up inside house

Things to Watch for This Month:

  • deer tick adults active on days when temperature is above freezing
  • squirrels active in attic
  • mice active in the house
  • residual leaves still on oak and beech trees (normal)
  • lowest light intensity for house plants at end of year
