Things to Do This Month:
- apply winter mulches to bulbs, perennials, and strawberries after the ground freezes
- use fertilizer to melt ice or use “kitty litter” or sand for traction
- plant balled Christmas trees, or wait until March
- plant overlooked spring bulbs during thaw or keep in refrigerator
- feed birds and wildlife. Provide thawed water.
- reapply deer repellants
- reapply antidesiccants during a warm period, if needed
- get catalogs; order seeds
- inspect stored bulbs, roots, winter vegetables for rot or desiccation
Things to Watch for This Month:
- winged yellow ants, only if weather mild
- ants
- house plant problems: environmental, low light, insects and mites
- ice and snow weight damage to plants
- blooming witchhazel and Christmas rose (Hellebore) bloom (late in the month)
- Overwintering insects (brown marmorated stink bug, boxelder bug, Asian lady beetle, Western conifer seed bug) that emerge and crawl or fly around indoors.
